Preface     Chapter 1     Chapter 2     Chapter 3     Chapter 4     Characters     Epilogue

A dark forest at night.
The only source of light is the reflection of the moon
on the surface of a wide and dark river
that separates the forest and all that surrounds it.

There is a man walking slowly in the middle of the night
on the calm surface of the river.
Next to him is a boat, where an old man is standing -
watching him with pride and satisfaction.

Finally the man reaches the shore and steps on to solid ground.
Then he leaves the old man, to continue his journey alone.

He sees a grand building on a higher mound
with countless rooms and halls inside,
and a woman in front of the entrance
with a key in her hands.

When the man approaches the woman
she hands the key over to him
and the man enters the grand building.

Opening doors, he walks through the rooms
to study the inside.

There are some beings near windows
looking from inside out,
but all they can see is their own reflection -
the rooms are lit inside and there is darkness outside.

The moon outside shines in the night,
and when the lights inside are off,
they see millions of stars,
that sometimes look like tunnels of light.

Most of these beings never tried to open the windows
or even to step outside into the surrounding darkness
where all sorts of creatures dwell.

It has been so for more than 5000 years
since the sun last set outside in 3114 BC.

When the day-night cycle inside the grand building
lasts for hours
the cycle outside lasts for thousands of years.

Similar to the smaller cycle,
the larger cycle has its event -
an exact moment when the sun sets
and when it rises.

This exact moment changes in time
and depending where the building is situated
the lenght of night may be shorter or longer.

Similar to some places inside the grand building
there are places outside the building where sun never sets.
And there are places where the sun never rises.

----

The man who entered the grand building,
who came through the night, walking on the dark river,
is looking through the window.

All he sees is his own reflection on the window.
Yet - the reflection is fading
as the burning rays of dawn are reflected in his eyes.

He came to witness the sunrise...
